Understanding the Curriculum Changes from September 2026

Water safety education is expanding beyond the pool. Under updated statutory guidance, schools will also be expected to support water safety learning through RSHE (Relationships, Sex & Health Education).

Current Curriculum Requirements

By the end of Year 6, every pupil should be able to:

  • Swim at least 25 metres
  • Use a range of strokes effectively (front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke)
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water situations

New Expectations from September 2026

Water safety will also be statutory in the classroom via RSHE (Relationships, Sex & Health Education).

Pupils will be taught:

  • How to identify risks around water (rivers, seas, canals, floods)
  • How to make safe decisions independently
  • Awareness of real-world dangers (cold water shock, currents, hidden hazards)
  • Broader “personal safety” education, including water
